Event 3
For my third event, I chose to attend “Weak or No Signal”. This event was comprised of multiple different installations that, to me, did not seem very connected at first. When I first got to the exhibit, I was confused by all of the different pieces in it. There were videos playing, small sculptures, projected images, and much more and none of them seemed to fit with anything else. The whole area just seemed disjointed and chaotic and it was hard for me to focus on any one thing. I started to think about what the point of all this could be.
After looking at the sheet that had information about the event, i realized that the showcase was made up of the work of multiple artists and they were each exploring different topics. This made me think a lot about how we collaborate with those around us and attempt to mold our own ideas to fit with others and make the excuse that it makes us easier to work with and more of a team player. But, all of these artists chose to present and compile their own projects knowing that they would be displayed in a singular event without compromising their artistic vision.
Although it seemed a bit disjointed, I appreciated how each piece represented an individual and each individual was distinct and different from those around them. The pieces ranged from a video featuring characters in a dystopian universe, to a projected moving image of abstract vivid colors. One was ominous and dark and the other was vibrant and beautiful and yet they were both exhibited in the same event. The contrast between all pieces provided an engaging and thought provoking experience that really forced me to take in each piece individually rather than just browsing mindlessly amongst pieces that blurred together under a themed umbrella.
Despite giving it my best effort, I am not ashamed to admit that I still don’t really understand the point or purpose of most of the pieces in this showcase or how any of the pieces are connected to one another throughout the entire showcase. But, I can still appreciate the time and work that went into them and accept the fact that sometimes we are forced to interpret things without any background and it is unlikely that we will understand exactly what the artist meant because we are not inside their heads and we cannot see their piece in the way they hoped we would. This was one of the hardest things for me to grasp about art because we are so conditioned to try to understand something correctly so we can feel as though we “got it right” but art can be interpreted in so many ways and I think that these pieces really showed that. Maybe there was a unifying theme and i completely missed it, but I am content with choosing to see the chaos and uniqueness of the individual pieces and appreciating the beauty in that.
